Can Particles Emit from Dynamic Paint?

Contests and Challenges

So here's my issue, we have this robot falling down and when it hits the ground we want it to kick up dirt/dust. In theory, I can take the alembic cache (from Maya) and have it animate through a mesh plane and create it's dynamic paint and make particles emit from that image sequence but I can't seem to make it work. I've been searching all over trying to find answers but maybe I'm using the incorrect terminology. Does anyone here have a solution to my problem?

I attached the file I've been working on to test this issue. It's a pretty simple file mostly following Exploring the Dynamic Paint Tool

Hey Colin, that's something I have tried quite a few times and I have never been able to get it to work very well. This should be fixed whenever the particle rewrite happens later on in the 2.8x series. The last time I had to do a similar effect, I just ended up manually placing and animating a few mesh emitters and got a decent result.
