UPDATE: As of November 29, 2018, Blender 2.8 is now in open BETA status!
This thread will be a list of information that I and others have found while exploring the alpha builds of Blender 2.8, that may be of use to established users of Blender 2.7x and previous versions in transitioning from the old to the new version. While the functionality and general layout of Blender 2.8 is substantially the same as in previous versions, there are some important and dramatic changes that may present extra challenges for experienced Blender users who are used to the way things have been up until now. This OP used to live on page 4 of the BC1-1808 August Class thread; but it was somewhat buried there, and I figured a dedicated thread which could be bumped to the top of the forum from time to time would make the information a lot more discoverable, especially for newer people.
As was the case during the alpha, new Blender 2.8 Beta preview builds are released daily - sometimes more than once per day - and can be downloaded at this page. Since Blender 2.8 is a work in progress, everything in this thread is subject to change. I would like to do things like add screenshots of different UI elements; but that will probably have to wait until 2.8 is closer to its final version - the fact is, UI elements, icons, layouts and such are still changing from time to time, often enough that there's just too much risk that screenshots and highly exact information will quickly become outdated and keeping up with all that would be a chore.
Anyone is welcome to post changes they've found in this thread. Feel free to discuss changes, announcements, and link articles and videos about new features of 2.8 as you learn about them. If you find videos that explain some new features well, by all means post them! This OP will contain the "main list of changes" and I'll try my best to update it periodically as new features or changes happen. I will add things that others find too, so that people don't necessarily have to read the entire thread to get all the information (I'll credit these additions). These updates won't happen every day though - so if you're going to explore 2.8, be prepared for new and unexpected things.
So, on with the changes.
1. User Interface
2. Hotkeys (note, of all the recent changes in 2.8, hotkey assignments are the most susceptible to being changed again before the official release)
3. Collections
The above is really all you need to know to use Collections in the same way as you used layers in 2.7x. Of course Collections are a little more powerful than that; I might post a more in-depth treatment at some point, or a video if I find a particularly well-made one.
4. Grease Pencil
The Grease Pencil tool as it existed on 2.7x is now called Annotations. It is selectable in the toolbar in Object and Edit Modes and the settings can be found in the N-panel and the Tool Settings tab in the Properties editor.
The name "Grease Pencil" in 2.8 now refers to a completely different, brand-new and complex 2D drawing and painting system for creating 2D animations in Blender. There was nothing like it in 2.7x, and I'm afraid I don't know much about it or how it works, as I'm strictly a 3D person. But, when I find an in-depth article or video tutorial about Grease Pencil, I will definitely post it here for the benefit of people who are interested in this hotly-anticipated new feature.
5. Addons
If you haven't checked on 2.8 in a while, you'll be pleased to learn that almost every addon included with Blender 2.8, now works and can be activated. You'll remember that in the earlier days of the alpha, most addons were disabled - and could not be enabled - with the exception of a select few like Node Wrangler and some import/export addons. Now, your IvyGen and your Archipack and your LoopTools and your Rigify all work and can be enabled. That said, you will find that the list of included addons has been noticeably pared down and many are missing. Extra Objects and Sapling, for instance, aren't there. Presumably the creators of those addons will have to update and re-release them by themselves.
jakeblended Thanks Jake!! This is very helpful 😊I'll keep a close eye on this thread, and when I come across new features / useful videos I'll be sure to post them 👍🏻
Hey everyone! I figured it would be better to put this in its own thread, rather than leaving it in the completed crash thread and having to be linked whenever anyone wants to reference it.
I guess there's no reason this thread can't be the place for talking about Blender 2.8 changes in general. So have at it!
jakeblended I was going hunt down some videos and make a list of changes and useful new things for myself before the release of version 2.8 (I'm hesitant to change before the full release) but, by the looks of it you saved me a lot of time :D I'll use this as a baseline list. Thanks very much.
Good stuff. started to look more 2.8 now that i'm clear of production work with 2.79.
on grease pencil stuff there is paid tutorials from Jama Jurabaev:s gumroad. that are for 2.8 definetly worth to check out.
According to Pablo Vasquez on his Blender Today livestream, the 2.8 team expects to finally push out the beta this week, most likely in the next day or two. As with the alpha and alpha2, the "beta" mostly means the label on the splash screen will change, but otherwise for most of us little else will - new builds will continue to be released regularly just like during the alpha. The Python API will be finalized around the same time so addon makers can update those.
Local View (using the Slash "/" key) is back again!
For wireframe mode, there has been a slight hotkey change - now Z opens the view-type pie menu and Shift-Z toggles X-ray mode.
Neat one: Ctrl-Tab now switches a Dope Sheet to a Graph Editor and vice versa. Not needing both of these on your screen at the same time should be a great space saver when animating!
jakeblended Hey, I'd like to add something to the pile, if I may. There's a slight GUI change for the Properties panel which I like and is maybe a touch more intuitive.
For some reason, it feels more intuitive to scroll down in that section to find the tab I'm looking for instead of the other way where I would tent to widen the window even though I knew I could scroll instead. +1 for me.
silentheart00 It is already there! Bullet point 9 in the User Interface section. :)
And you're right on - I love it as well. It was always a little awkward having to middle-mouse-drag on those icons to scroll through them horizontally; hardly anything else in Blender's interface really worked that way. Just like you I always felt like I had to widen the panel more than it needed to be, for that reason. The way it is now, usually my Properties window is tall enough that I don't even have to scroll to see all the icons. It just seems way better to me. By the way - by right-clicking on the icon list you can swap it to the right side of the panel instead of the left side, if you're so inclined.
I was surprised on the dev forums to see some opposition to the vertical tabs....but it wasn't much opposition, and anyway I suppose there's going to be at least someone upset with any given change.
jakeblended Whoops! Guess I should take a closer look instead of skimming it next time 😅 And yeah, some people don't like change, but you can't stay static forever. How do you grow otherwise?
jakeblended Any idea where you can find properties tab icons and setup their colors?
louhikarme This I do not know. I know that all of the Blender icons are still very much a work in progress, and that includes some of them maybe being colorized, so whatever changes you make now might get overwritten by future builds. I've seen on BA that some people are experimenting with icon design; and the Blender directory does have an icons folder in it (*DIRECTORY*/2.80/datafiles/icons), but it has nothing but DAT files in it, and I would have no idea how to extract images from those, or make images back into those, or if that's actually even the right folder for the small UI icons. Can't help, I'm afraid. :(
jakeblended That is awesome Jake that you transported this collection of the 2.8 experiences to an own thread.
When we spoke about it in the October class that could be continued what you started in the August one, you found the right format now as really it has much better place here where more people can find it.
Thanks very much, going to read regularly
jakeblended bugger. guess i have to wait until they have release candidate and maybe then themes have more customization options available. thanks for the reply. :)
nekronavt It is indeed - a very very big change. An unexpected one, too! And they've done work to make left-click mode more usable generally, as well. I'm ambivalent about whether I will continue with right-click, which I'm now so used to, or change to left-click again. Both styles are fully functional and valid. Right-click for me still has that single, but to me very important, advantage of having different buttons to click for selecting and actions/operations. But there's no denying that right-click select was very difficult for brand new users to adapt to.
Who do i need to bribe to get the search bar put back into the space menu? i use it constantly and f3 is a terrible key to press when your hand mostly rests over the lower left of the keyboard as thats where most of the important keys reside.
oollavulpes you can selet spacebar action in input preferences or on splashscreen.
