MatCap per mesh?

Collaborations

Continuing with sculpting.
MatCap - How to make each object have a different Matcap?

head MatCap1, Eyes Matcap2, etc. Currently when a different MatCap is selected it effects all in scene.

MatCap is a viewport "trick" so as such one matcap assignment in the viewport... or at least that's how I understand it to be...

  • Pavel Mazanik(nekronavt) replied

    I don't think you can :(

But you can assign different color, specular and roughness with different materials in Material Tab -> Viewport Display (in 2.8)

    Thanks all!
The sculpting tools are cool. Was hoping it would be similar to ZBrush. Also I don't think it will sculpt in certain viewport modes.

me1958424 Hmm... that's a good question. I know in the early 2.8 builds, you had the ability to do matcaps per object or collection, but that was when they had the matcaps in the properties panel. I'm not sure if that's still an option or if it's something buried somewhere.

However, I did notice that you *can* use the matcaps with the "random color" option. This will give each object a random color for the matcap. It shows up better on some matcaps than it does on others, but could still be useful in differentiating the various parts.

gradyp as you point out, 2.8 may change this, I was speaking of current Blender up to 2.79...

  • Grady Pruitt(gradyp) replied

me1958424 Oh, 2.79 wasn't even an option for per object.. either everything is or nothing is.

That said, if you look on the materials properties, there is an option to have each material show a different color... Viewport color. In the solid shaded mode, it will use this color to shade your object. Not quite the matcap you were looking for, and it's per material, rather than object, but perhaps that can help.
