Ken Claassen Homework Thread!

I only joined CG Cookie about a week ago so I missed the first two classes. So here is my homework from Week 3 onwards.

Week 4 Homework: Unfortunately due to being sick and also biting off more than I could chew I didn't finish the model to the level I wanted but here is where I got to. At least I was able to make it PG in time.

    cptken Awesome sculpting

  • Ken Claassen(cptken) replied

    mmahir07 Thanks :)

Here's another update. Unfortunately I've gotten really sick yesterday and today so my progress on this has been super slow. However, I did manage to refine the head a bit and I plonked it onto the body, its not actually attached yet, It's just sitting there and I'll boolean Unify it later and fix the transition. I finished the feet and started doing the armor.  I've realised that I really don't like mesh modelling compared to sculpting. So fiddly and feels slow.

There's so much left to do and I don't know if I'll be able to finish it being sick and all. I'll do my best though. Here's the list of things I need to do to get this done as originally planned:

    • Create remaining steel plate armor
    • Armor Straps
    • Cloth & Flexible clothing
    • Spear (currently just placeholder
    • Hair
    • Sculpt facial expression
    • Finish the hands
    • Armor Detailing

hmmm a bunch of those may have to be post homework project XD

cptken I have a good feeling about the final result :D Love the dynamics.

Right lower leg looks a bit unproportional from this point of view, i think. And clavicle looks is pretty straight for this pose. But I'm not very good at anatomy, so it just my feeling :)

  • Ken Claassen(cptken) replied

nekronavt Thanks  for the feedback Pavel. I'll have to have a look at the clavicle again after I properly attach the head and fix the neck. It may be a bit big.

Regarding the right leg, it dos look a little small to me too. However, I'm thinking it may be due to the orthographic camera in this shot. Hmm maybe it is a bit too short or the back one too long. I'll have to investigate further

  • Pavel Mazanik(nekronavt) replied

@cptken oh, yeah. Orthographic camera can consfuse sometimes :)

  • Ken Claassen(cptken) replied

Well here is the final one. Unfortunately I didn't manage to finish it in time as I expected. However, I'm happy with what I managed to achieve. This was really hard, much harder than the orc and it took about 26 hours. I'd love to give her some hair but I don't really know how at this point. Something I'll learn later.

I had a lot more planned, to finish the armor, the weapon, the hair and make it much more detailed but it ended up being really time consuming and being sick didn't help. I'm happy that I managed to whip together the expression tonight, I wasn't sure if that was going to turn out. Anyway here it is. Hope you all like it.

I had a lot more planned

I think this was the problem for all of us, but even with what you managed to do this is utterly excellent. I hope you go back to this when you know how to do hair.  You have a lot of skill and I hope you keep at it.

cptken Beautiful job! Glad you were able to hit some of your "to do" list items. I like  how you sculpted the forearm to look like the bones are twisting to hold the spear. It is a nice dynamic pose too. The tip of the spear and the edge of the head are rather close to touching from this angle. She looks like a competent warrior, but if you move the spear slightly forward so it overlaps the head, it will look less dangerous to your character's wellbeing.

cptken It's looking beautiful and bad ass so far! You've done a lot in such a short time, great job! 😄

cptken Wow, Great work. Nice body muscle. I like all the details on the hands and legs. You did so much work i can see. And also like the clothing. Facial expression looks awesome. Are you working on the hair now?

cptken Huhhh Ken that is some awesome model for Week 4. Not mentioning even the Week3 one which had absolutely the same high quality just I missed somehow to mention that time - you are a very talented sculpter!

cptken Once again you swung for the fences this week, Ken! Go big or go home. You and Aaron are inspiring us all. A fully detailed, realistic character sculpt, posed, with clothes, and with details down to individual teeth - that's a huge undertaking. I'm impressed you made it this far into the project.

Some anatomy feels a little off. Notably her right hand (grasping the spear) seems too small and the pose feels a little stiff. I think it's in the joints that give a slight impression of being separate body parts rather than a interwoven limbs. Sorry, I know that's a vague note and I'm trying to figure out how to word it better. But take the neck for example: The anatomy of the twisted neck parts could be better defined, emphasize the underlying bone/muscle structure that enables the neck to turn this way. Here's a photo to help illustrate what I mean:
Image result for women javelin throw

But I think this note could be applied to all joints where they feel less defined and the underlying bone/muscle structure isn't emphasized completely. So the end result is something close to a posed action figure rather than a 100% realistic human body.

Don't get the wrong impression from the wall-o-text feedback. Your anatomy is like 75-80% correct imo - I'm only critiquing the remaining 20-25%. So it's ultimately a fantastic sculpt! Clearly you're a gifted sculptor and I'm just trying to push you that much further.

You've made a big splash these past 2 weeks. I'm really looking forward to seeing where you take your skills. A++ this week, Ken 👏

  • Ken Claassen(cptken) replied

@theluthier Thanks for the feedback Kent. I know what you mean, there could definitely be a lot more refinement in the anatomy of this one, particularly in the detail around the joints. I kinda just ran out of time and found myself saying "It's good enough for now, move on, there's so much more to do!" lol. I'm keen to keep going down the path of character sculpting and continue refining my anatomy. I really like doing realistic, high detail stuff and aspire to make sculpts like I sometimes see on artstation and have to think twice whether its real or not XD.

The class has been a great experience for me. I was so scared of sculpting not too long ago and I'm so excited to find that it's something that I'm not too bad at. I've got a long way to go still though and will keep challenging myself. I feel that if I just keep chipping away there's nothing I can't do in this space.

However, for now I need a short break. Sculpting so much over the last two weeks has tired me out. Also I want to go through some of the other courses and learn different things about blender, other modelling techniques as well as rendering and lighting. I'm still very much a n00b at everything.

Thanks for running the class, it's been fun and I appreciate it. Look forward to next time.
