This is my first class. So hope I'm getting it done right. I've been using blender on and off for the past 6 months when I have time.
kkocher Sculpting is difficult if you haven't done it before. Keep practicing.
Love the Dalek! :D
You're doing great with the sculpting. Like I said on the main class thread, especially if it's your first time, it can take a while to get the likeness to look right. The first sculpt that I got serious about doing right I think I spent at least 20-30 hours (if not twice that) before it really started looking like I wanted it to -- and there were many hours spent tweaking here, redoing this, redoing that, before I finally figured out how to get it to look right. In the end, though, it was worth it because others haven't taken me anywhere near as long to reach at least recognizability.
One thing that can help is to study proportions. Unless you're doing this for stylistic reasons, the eyes are way up high on the head, which is probably at least part of why this feels off to you, and I think other features are "larger" to compensate for the eyes being too far up. Eyes are typically about halfway between the chin and the top of the head.
As for the mouth.. that's one area I still struggle with a lot myself , though hopefully I'm getting better at them :D
Keep it up!
kkocher Good job with the sculpts. Learning it can be exhausting and not everyone have to be a great sculpter. But when you get to it, it can be pretty fun.
gradyp Thanks for the help on the proportions. I knew there was something wrong but couldn't spot it myself. I'm sure you are also right about the eyes throwing off the proportion of the rest of the face. I will keep those tips in mind on my next sculpture. Thanks
kkocher you did good work you're first time sculpting, it takes some time to get used to it but after a while it becomes much easier. Just keep practicing 😊
kkocher Sculpting is definitely a difficult craft. It's like golf: It never gets easy, we just get better at playing the game. Especially starting out, it's a lot to balance new tools, new workflow, and a sculptor's perspective. You're doing great! Keep it up, Mark. A+ from me.
Even though it was more difficult than you thought, did you have fun sculpting? Or would you say it's not for you?
kkocher really nice work i love how the lightning works in this scene . nice decoration too . great job
kkocher Looks like something from a Pier 1 Imports catalog. Great job.
kkocher Dem textures thooooo. Really nice stuff Mark, you seem to have a knack for materials.
kkocher Mark congratulations that you managed to finish your first class, it is a challenge itself to post homeworks on all the weeks.
Hopefully you are planning to come also at October and do your Grand Slam again :-)
kkocher Hey this looks nice! And I recognize the floor texture lol.
Just a little bevel or subsurf and tight holding edges to make stuff not looking razor sharp and it's perfect!
Ps. Adding the baseboard is very small thing to do but it makes a big difference in a scene like this
swikni Thanks. I didn't think about it but you are 100% correct about the baseboard.... I knew there was something missing but didn't see it.
kkocher Nice job this week, Mark! Kudos on branching out from modeling only and into texturing / lighting / rendering. Heh the floor texture looked familiar right away. And I'll give the same note I gave to Jere: I can't say that I've seen many (or any actually) 100% matte floor finishes. Almost always they're polyurethaned and have reflections as a result. Currently the floor's lack of reflection flattens the scene and diminishes its dimensionality. I highly recommend adding some subtle glossy reflections with the image texture contributing bump to it as well.
Also +1 to the baseboard note.
Overall though it's a solid render. It's an A in my book 👏
Late to the party. Good textures/shaders! The image feels squished, though, like the image was scaled incorrectly. I agree with the other critiques. Good work, just push it that extra little bit.
