Hello,
I have been trying very hard different ways adding more knife cuts around but with no luck. Please see images below. This is my mesh with edges to be beveled selected.
Now edges are beveled.
And now comes my problem, see red circled edges are hard? There is no hard edges set, mesh is set to smooth and these edges just stay sharp. I have EdgeSplit modifier angle 45 deg.
Please help me solve that problem.
Thank you very much.
Hey aarb65912 , my first guess is that there are edges overlapping or are so close together that they appear to be a harsh transition. I'm curious, why use the edge split modifier at all in this case? You could also double check that Auto Smooth is turned off in the object data properties.
Hey Jonathan,
No overlapping or close together edges. I deleted the edge split modifier and Auto Smooth is OFF. Very similar result.
Also Bevel Modifier does not give me shallower edges.
@jlampel Hello, do you have any recommendations after reading my reply? I would like to really know what I am doing wrong...
aarb65912 It's hard to say in this case, because I'm not sure what exactly you're going for here. Your result looks as one might expect if a beveled hard surface is shaded smooth. Are you using the bevel modifier with the limit method set to weight? In most hard surface cases though, I would leave edge split off and turn on auto smooth with a high degree (65 or so) and manually mark the beveled edges as sharp. You can also turn off Clamp Overlap in the bevel modifier settings to spot the area which is preventing you from getting wider corners.
Thank you Jonathan, It is amazing how many different approaches one can take to get better or worse results.
I think I finally got it to acceptable level, my main concern was how is it going to export to flight simulator and I think it is not too bad.
Thank you again!
The whiter patches is the lighting in simulator. There will be normal map but I can tell it is going to be good enough for me.
