Hello guys,
I am still relatively new to 3D modeling (6 months) and have therefore gone straight to PBR, not knowing the differences between the old way of doing it, which is what Skyrim requires. I am making a small Skyrim mod and it is important that it uses the specular workflow.
I basically textured my weapons in Substance Painter in metalness and now I can't for the life of me figure out how to convert the textures to the specular workflow. I tried experimenting but every time it feels like I am going to break something.
Is it possible to convert from PBR to Specular fast and painlessly? If so, please give step by step instructions. I would appreciate it.
Thank you!
Does it not allow you to use the metallic map as a specular map? There are slight differences but you may be able to use them interchangeably for the most part. That being said you can change the maps you export in Substance Painter. This is the short tutorial I found that covers the process a bit more in-depth by Wes McDermott who does pretty much all their tutorials ( for Allegorithmic): https://unity3d.com/learn/tutorials/modules/intermediate/graphics/substance/04-02-exporting-textures-from-substance-painter
You can build up an export template using what was taught in that video. Typically I export for Unity 5 metallic workflow so it's been a while since I've done it. There may also be a workflow already premade for you to use.
While they can look similar, there are a few key differences that might make the model look pretty weird if used interchangeably. Besides the video Jonathan mentioned above, here's a video I made about what makes them different so that you can convert them manually in Photoshop if necessary:
