Putting assets made from following courses on CGCookie into portfolio for college application

Collaborations

I'm applying to a local College in Canada for a 3D Animation program, and the application's asking to submit a portfolio that "includes 10 examples of original work. A variety of media is ideal (e.g. drawing, painting, musical, written and photography)".

I was wondering if it would be appropriate to include some renders of models I've made following some courses on here, such as the pilot from introduction to character modelling. I wouldn't think it would look good to put into a work portfolio, but maybe in the context of college it would be different? The pieces I am more happy with are ones that were from tutorials from here.

I attached one of the pieces I wanted to include as an example

    Hi Robert,

I would be very careful, it's a sensitive topic. The college requests for original work, and although the artwork you're thinking about looks great and you technically did it yourself, it's not something that could be reasonably called original work. People could recognize it and that can be an unnecessary risk to see your application rejected.

For such a portfolio I think you are expected to show what yourself can do on your own, meaning without following a step-by-step tutorial and produce the same objects as the course. I would rather create a character on my own (and still be able to follow the same steps as the tutorial).

I saw somewhere a great discussion on this very topic, can't find it yet but I'll make sure to post it when I get it.

Let me know if I'm unclear!

I think tbrbn hit the nail on the head - we certainly wouldn't mind, but if whoever is reviewing the applications recognizes it then they'll think less highly of your portfolio. My suggestion is to take those courses and make something similar, but not identical. Try taking that pilot and giving him different clothes, haircut, make him into a female character,  or anything to make him unique and not so recognizable.

    Good luck!
