Anime eyes in 3D, how do they work

Contests and Challenges

Hello guys, I am summoning your character artist skills to help me figure out anime eye's in 3D.

Is it better to use a gigantic deformed sphere or just a painted plane for the eyes? I can't seem to figure this out, i've seen a ton of anime scultping videos and the artist just paint a plane in the place of the eyes, but by doing that wouldn't it be weird to animate?

Check this out: Twilight Princess Eyes Breakdown. It has a pretty thorough look at how eyes are animated and created for various Zelda games.

jgonzalez Thanks for sharing this little bit of pure gold. For some  reason, Nintendo especially gives off this kind of vibe that they use  some kind of esoteric magic to create their assets!

The  scripting for the texture manipulation and UV shifting for the pupils  seems like it'd be crazy for how seemingly simple it appears. :P

arcangel_zero7 It's always surprising when you see how complex some of these things are. When done right they look simple and natural, but getting them to that point sometimes means extensive testing and building of a more intensive system.
