Game Res Poly- Chetan

Hi guys, I am Chetan Ranjan, a 3d artist from India and I am learning about making games. I joined CGC in july 2017 to learn blender. Before that, I used Maya as my main tool.

I am going to post game res model and my workflow WIPs here and then, post the completed project in the gallery.

This is my first attempt at making a game res character. This started as a speed sculpt where I only sculpted till the torso and then afterwards I took it further 2 month later(mid-October) and decided to create a game res model. Inspired from demons search on google and doom(ofcourse).

Then I started to throw a lot of stuff in their to see what works and also tried some over paint to get a general idea of what to do with him. During this time I used a ton of pictures to get some design ideas. Pictures of demons, knights,bio-mech, attack on titan, dragon ball, medieval armors and pokemon maybe. :)

This is the finished hi-poly character.

Then I started the RETOPO!! phase which took me around 6 days(4-5 hrs/day) to complete it. I love to do retopo.

Now, I am currently optimizing the character to be below 30k tris and then I will start to work on UVs.

Very nice work :) , this is most impressive. I look forward to seeing this get textured.

  • Chetan Ranjan(ranjancnr) replied

    Thanks Matthew.
I completed the Uvs and also optimized the character to be on 27.7k tris. I will start working on texturing Phase next on tuesday. As of Monday(today), I am going to watch some tutorials on substance painter on youtube:)

  • Chetan Ranjan(ranjancnr) replied

Done with the texturing Phase and this model for now. I am satisfied with how the textures turned out but I think that I could have done more if my deadline had allowed me to watch more tutorials on substance painter. I will return to this after learning rigging in blender and also basic stuff in unity, then pose it and re-render it. Maybe a month or so. :) Learnt a lot by doing this.

Wow man , you work fast :) , I look forward to seeing it rigged and coming to life , good luck!

  • Jonathan Lampel replied

Hey Chetan, this is fantastic! Really nice work 👏👏

  • Phil Osterbauer(phoenix4690) replied

Awesome work! Get riggin' and breath some life into this guy!!

  • jazze replied

    Wow, that is excellent! :D

  • Chetan Ranjan(ranjancnr) replied

    Thank you everyone.
Before rigging this guy I am planning to rig a simple character so that I can get familiar with weight painting and basic rigging for animation in blender.

  • Chetan Ranjan(ranjancnr) replied

    Hi Guys!
I have started working on a new game character.
    Here is the first Wip.
    Comment and critics plz.

  • Arthur Shapiro(zickkie) replied

Hello, Chetan! The character is impressive as to me, I really like how you sculpt the creases and inflatons/deflations of the clothes. But don't you think that arms and hands are too large comparing to the rest body?

  • Kent Trammell replied

Excellent work rranjancnr! You seem to know a thing or two about creating characters. How are you finding the transition from Maya (and Zbrush maybe?) to Blender?

  • Chetan Ranjan(ranjancnr) replied

Thank you Kent @theluthier for appreciating my work. It means a lot.

Transition from Maya to Blender for me is till now great. I can't really say much in this topic because I have not done any complicated modeling like cars or tank in Blender but I think it will be smooth.

Right now, I am only using blender for retopology and getting clean topology because I can't get them in Core. I also use Blender to paint base textures.

  • Chetan Ranjan(ranjancnr) replied

    Hipoly finished.
I will start on low poly after sometime because my laptop is dying. :(

  • Chetan Ranjan(ranjancnr) replied

After building a ryzen rig, I started working on this guy again. Retopo and  UVs done. It took me around 4 days total. Next texturing. :)

  • Chetan Ranjan(ranjancnr) replied

Texturing completed and so does this modeling phase. Next I will attempt to rig it.
All textures except pant are hand painted in Blender, Krita and substance Painter.

Looking good! I usually try to give some critique, but I'm not seeing a lot to pick on here. I do have two questions though:

Are his eyebrows shiny? The amount of gloss that his mohawk has is perfect, could you use that for the eyebrows as well?

The shape of his shoes also seems odd, like they're giant slippers that got muddy. Which style of boot are you after?

Everything else is looking spot on. Keep it up!

  • Chetan Ranjan(ranjancnr) replied

    Thank you Jon @jlampel

Yes his eyebrows are shiny because I forgot to paint ID color on that part. It is attach to the face so it has the same material as the face and looks so shiny. I notice that now you have mentioned it. I will make it right. :)

The shape of shoes are an experiment. My concept was that these shoes have more space inside them for the movement of fingers so that they are not squeezed against each other and they are also universal-age-group friendly(basically every human-fat,thin etc belonging age group of 22-30) that are made especially for a zombie killing sport.

  • Chetan Ranjan(ranjancnr) replied

While I am trying to figure out what to do in life I created this after watching 'Painting with AO' Tutorial for an experiment just like krodh warrior except it is done within 30mins. I want to tell stories visually but I am still stuck between 2d and 3d war in my head. I am not so good in 2d and I am good in 3d so I am trying to merge both side but the war is still going on.

About previous project, I think I am not sure whether I will post anything on them for a while. I think I am burnt out after doing a lot of research on mixing.
