Aligning an objects local axes how you want them.

I have a project I'm working where a panel extends out of a cylinder (The cylinder is lying on it's side), it's at a 45 degree angle with the centre but I want to make it so that the section's local Z axis is set at a 45 degree offset, so when I grab it along local Z it extends in line with it's housing. I can't figure out how exactly to do that though.

    Grand thank you! I had tried this before, but it hadn't worked. I'm absolutely sure of that, it wouldn't recognise local Z as being different. I tried it again exactly as you described, and lo and behold it unjinxed itself. Thanks a lot for the help!
