I am having trouble replicating the workflow where Jonathan uses [Ctrl + Right Click] to quickly insert a vertex. I have specified a placeholder object and am currently working within Edit Mode. 
I have managed to slove the problem. I was working with Edge Selection Mode rather than Vertex Selection Mode. When switching selection modes, the vertex became visible.
