I'm used to selecting an object and pressing F to zoom in. Is there a way to achieve a similar effect for the trees, grass, rocks, etc.? I'm having difficulty navigating sometimes because the rotation of the view is based on the whole terrain object, not the little piece of it I'm trying to paint on.
I don't believe you can do that with terrain objects unfortunately. I know they've revamped the terrain system for Unity 2019 so it might be included now, but I don't remember that being a feature when I last used it.
