Why isn't my side render working?

Question

When I render, it comes up blank, is there any way to stop this?

Is the viewport render paused by chance? Look for a pause icon to the far right of that panel's top bar (you'll have to middle mouse click and drag)

Ahh it looks like your bottom-right viewport is set to "solid" view rather than rendered view:

Ahh ha! It's because you're camera is zoomed way in and all that's visible is the grey plane, appearing to be a blank render. Just move the camera around and you'll see the scene rendering (dull and grey, but rendering nonetheless)
