Is there any way to hide portions of the mesh when 3-D texture painting? That is when I'm painting a portion of the mesh that is in the foreground, how do I keep my brush from painting on the portions of the model behind it?
It sounds like you're asking about "project paint" settings, which I discuss at 1:20 in the video. The Occlude, Cull, and Normal checkboxes are all methods of limiting the paint strong to the foreground portions of the model being painted.
Or did I misunderstand the question?
Sorry my question was badly worded. I am trying to texture paint a tree trunk and branches. When I paint on one of the branches, either the trunk or another branch may be behind it and get spillover onto it. I was looking for a feature like the hide function in mesh editing, where you can work on one portion of the mesh and not risk selecting unwanted vertices.
Oh I see what you mean now. At 5:20 in this lesson, I demo the "Face Selection Masking" feature of texture paint mode. Essentially it enables component selections from Edit Mode to serve as a mask for painting, where selected faces are paintable and unselected faces are not paintable. That's the best way to mask areas of your model for painting while excluding others.
That's it, thanks so much, Kent. I knew that feature must be in there somewhere. So basically select the faces you want to work on in edit mode and then in texture paint mode, select the "face selection masking for painting" button.
