Hey, I have a question based on the amount of time a concept artist needs to spend on his work. Back in college when I was studying graphic design, I found out that my photoshop teacher was a concept artist. After chatting with him for some time I realized that was the actual career path I wished to follow. However, there was one thing that bothered me that he told me. He said that he had to follow a specific time frame when working. He told me he had to do 3 concepts characters in under an hour (with landscapes and other "hard surface" stuff taking longer). Is this true? Is this a time frame I need to follow when I am working or does it differ between companies?
Hey Alex, it's different between companies, but that's definitely a great thing to practice for. I wouldn't say you need to be that fast when doing personal projects, in fact I'd encourage spending much more time on your main portfolio pieces, but the ability to concept quickly like that will be very helpful in the industry. Perhaps warm up with some of those quick projects before continuing to work on longer projects - that way you get experience with both workflows.
