Any particular reason you're painting the black & white bump map over the purple?

Is painting the purple one harder? Are there any differences in performance?

    I'm not sure what you mean "painting over the purple". As far as I can tell and remember, the bump is entirely greyscale. Would you mind clarifying vvaculik?

    @theluthier Sorry, I should proof read my questions before asking.

    Is there any reason you're painting a black & white map instead of a purple/blue/red normal map directly onto the mesh? Isn't it always preferable to use normal maps over the black & white ones in games?

  • Kent Trammell replied

    Oh I see what you mean. Normal maps are generally preferred, but imo the noticeable differences between normal maps (purple-y) and bump maps (greyscale) can be negligible:

    If you look closely, there are differences but it's not that big of a deal if you ask me, especially not in this situation. Still, a greyscale bump map can always be converted to a purple-y normal map if desired. But I've never seen someone paint a straight-up normal map. That'd be a mind-bender 😅

    @theluthier Ok thanks.

    Just a quick note: I didn't get a notification.
