How??????????????????????????

posted to: Modeling a Wheel

How? Seriously though how do you make the rim/spoke and how do you make the treads? Unless I missed something I have no idea how to do this and I've already spent at least 3 days trying to figure this out. I'm so frustrated I have half the mind to quit CG Cookie.

Hey Sorta, have you already gone through the Mesh Modeling Fundamentals? I'd recommend reviewing them if you've forgotten anything. The most important tools you'll need for this are the extrude tool and the loop cut tool. Practice those on your own for a bit before coming back to this exercise and I know you can do it. If you get stuck at any particular point, you can always post screenshots and ask for advice in the Community: https://cgcookie.com/topics

I'm agree with sorta, i see all courses before , and i able to do the same question "how?", we learn a lot of how modifiers works, or tools like extrude, inset, bevel, etc, but we need more practice, more examples and exercises. We need to see how model an axe, a sword, table, chair, chain and another common objects from skratch, to have an idea...

Sorry for my bad english, is just an advice...

It's sad that there are no how to tutorials for a total beginner on how to make the wheel project. It would be nice if you guys at CG Cookie could do that since we are paying customers after all. I did find this easy to follow tutorial  for a wheel and there is another more advanced wheel to make as well.

I managed using nothing, but a box prims and empty axis prims. It wasn't easy and personally I think mine looks like crap, but this is still basically a beginner course, you can figure out how to make it look nice later if making tires is really what you want to do. For this exercise it's really just proving that you understood the material.

When will it be released ?

In the mean time while we wait on the Bootcamp, I remember Jonathan's videos from a couple years ago really helped me tackle this wheel:

Then after that there's a video on modeling the Tire.

I have to agree too, that's one thing I really would love to see on this site, a solution for exercices like this! The painting axt section for example had that and I learned a lot only by watching the solution video for the exercice. I personally was able to create the wheel when I tried the exercice a few mounth ago but had no idea how to create the treads, that's why I never submitted it.

I am just about to start doing this exercise so I will see how it goes for me. I know it's a while since you commented, but what I would recommend is to download some photos of wheels from the front and also of the thread, and set them as the background image (in object mode press N and it's at the bottom). You can see the image only in orthographic mode. Then just model one segment of it over the image and duplicate it with the modifiers. Maybe if you're stuck find a really simple wheel.

Funny how at the beginning at the video he literally says "I want to move on to one of the more difficult parts of the modeling process for this entire shape, and that is the wheels" yet beginners are supposed to model one on their own without barely any help.
