I used to do mark sharp with auto-smoothing just as you explained here. However, when I exported to Unreal Engine 4, it was completely smooth. I thought this was for Blender specific shading, so that deterred me from using it further. I'm wondering now if I might have goofed up back then?

    I don’t think it was a goof with the modeling, I’d bet that it had to do with the export. Some exporters have an extra checkbox for “Smooth Groups”, which is how Unreal handles sharp edges.

    Ahh I see. Yeah, I was wondering why my imports from Maya also had sharp edges. (I like Blender whenever possible but employers told me Maya while on their payroll or no job)
