I'm trying to do the UV consolidation and transfer the UV map back to the original object. The transfer fails due to a different number of loops, eg. 495 loops where 193 are expected. I did not change the mesh data in between...

    The mesh must have changed somewhere along the way. 495 loops compared to the expected 193 is a big discrepancy.

    One of the common ways I see this happen is if there were mirror modifiers used before combining. By chance, did you use mirror modifiers?

    Solution found: I had "limit selection to visible" switched on when separating the meshes of the unified UV map. Switching it of separated the whole objects...
