When creating rubble i used rigid bodies to drop stuff, then "froze" a good resul by baking the frame and moved that result to my main scene - can i do that w/ a fire? i can't work it out on the bit of fumbling i've tried, but basically i want to create fire then freeze it at a certain point at which it looks good, then bake that as an object to drop into my scene. TIA

Not quite, but you can use the same caching technique as with particles to use a previously baked simulation in another scene: https://cgcookie.com/lesson/cache/

thanks for the quick reply. my scene will have two fires in it - if i create them separately and cache them, and assign them in my main scene, will i not hit timeline issues using the cache? if, eg, one has great-looking flames at frame 30 and the other has great flames at 75, am i able to step through each cache timeline separately? this is why i was hoping i could just bake the fire as a single-frame object and import/append it. cheers

Ah sorry I missed your reply on this one. You can set the cache to start at whatever frame you choose, so that you can pick the best frames for your animation.
