    In the videos I saw that you can "ctrl click" to select bones in weight paint mode. I am doing the rigging of the dog on mac and it does not seem to work. This is pretty maddening as I need to select manually vertex groups.

      Make sure you go from Pose Mode to Weight Paint Mode in order for the CTRL + Selection to work.
