When I begin sculpting, it appears that back faces of the mesh get sculpted as well but in weird ways. In addition, I typically get two facets of different angles forming during a single scuplting process.

Look in the Brush settings for the checkbox called "Front Faces Only". Try enabling that to see if it helps.

Thanks for the response. Turns out it was having the X symmetry enabled.
