Why wouldn't you make Melvin straight on when using the skin modifier. (as opposed to making him in the pose given) After he was modeled you could rig him and put him in the proper position. It would ensure that the figure was perfectly symmetrical, and might allow the 3d model to be closer looking to the original sketch from the artist (referring to the butt hump that got removed)

    If I intended Melvin as a riggable character for animation, then indeed I would model him symmetrically. But I think sculpting characters in-pose takes practice that benefits a sculptor's skills.
