Hi, when trying to create the skin modifier I keep getting an error that says "No valid root vertex found (you need one per mesh island you want to skin)" ... I followed step by step the directions from the video, but I can't get that working. Any idea what am I doing wrong? Thanks :-)

I was using Blender 2.77, I downloaded 2.75 and now looks like is working properly.

Hmm, I'm not sure I've ever seen that error when using the Skin Modifier. Thanks for sharing the fact that the error seems fixed in 2.77!

I get the same warning with 2.77a. It appears when you have a mesh with only one vertex. After extruding the vertex the warning goes away an you con continue working.

Suddenly getting the same error. Was working fine exactly as Kent showed in tutorial. Went back to build another base mesh and suddenly having same problem. I'm using v2.78a. Any thoughts? Thanks! Here's a quick video of what I'm doing: https://www.screencast.com/t/2vwmReqAw

Okay - working again - per birkov above, once you extrude your first point the warning goes away. I had trouble even extruding until I realized I needed to be in "vertex select" in edit mode.

Hey i'm with the 2.79 version.
Here's the solution to fix the problem:

If you only have one vertex, and try to add the modifier, the error will appear.
I think blender is looking for at least 2 vertex to defne one as a root and the other one as the extruded vertex.

    So:
1°) Make sure you have the vertex mode active !
2°) Add a single vertex in object mode, go in EDIT mode and extrude it.
    3°) Add the skin modifier.

You're first vertex will be the root.

    Or:
1°) Make sure you have the vertex mode active !
2°) Add a single vertex in object mode
    3°) Add the skin modifier.

The error will be here but just extrude the vertex and it will goes off.
(NB: the extuded vertex will be the root and will follow your extrusion.)

Thanks for sharing a solution galledark!
