When I apply the smoothing in object mode I find that the vectors go haywire and explode all over the place, leaving it to look nothing like the frame. What could be issue?

Does your modifier stack go Skin Modifier first, then Subdivision Surface modifier second? Often applying modifiers out of order will cause issues.
