I enabled GLSL but nothing changes when I add lighting, the object still has a black color. I'm using the latest version of blender.

Are you using Blender Render as your engine or Cycles?

Yes i'm using Blender render, when I press shift z I get a similar result to yours but it uses a whole lot of memory making it very slow, I'm not sure were I went wrong.

SHIFT + Z enables viewport rendering - You don't want that. Instead you want to switch to "Texture" shading to see GLSL in action.

For some reason I'm unable to reply to your second reply so I'll do it on the first. When I enable texture shading the object turns black ,the same is for material.

You probably don't have lights in your scene then. I recommend going back and watching the beginning of this lesson where I setup the viewport lighting.
