Scaling to 0

Around the minute 8, when I am rescaling the faces we don't need, my faces close to the faces we need to keep are still joined and show a triangle connection with the middle faces. When I move the scale to 0 faces the triangle moves with the dot. Is there a way I can avoid this, I've been playing around with this but I can't find a solution. Thanks

    I believe it is because you are in vertex selection in the UV editor. You have to be in face selection, otherwise it'll match the vertices that share a seam.
