UV Unwrap type

Hi,

I was just wondering about which UV unwrap type to use, as I have multiple options in version 4.5 of Blender. I assume that it is 'Unwrap - angle based'. They all seem to give a similar result with the UV's running in the correct direction, but was interested to know if one will give a better result than others and why.

Thanks

I've always used angled based and if it doesn't give me great results, I use conformal. But I'd say not to worry too much about it, cuz in reality, almost everyone just goes with whatever gives you the best result. Blender has so many options, so may ways of doing the same thing, so many ways it works with stuff under the hood, that strictly speaking, most Blender users just use the stuff without knowing exactly how it works. Because in the end, we're trying to make appealing art and a lot of times the technical jargon gets too much in the way, so it's something not to pay much attention to in so it detracts from the real goal. Stay calm and keep blending.

Angle based (best for organic objects) and Conformat (best for hard surface models) are the older formats. Minimal (minimum stretch) is generally the best all-around default option for models like characters, sculpted objects, or other geometry where the face angles and area ratios vary significantly as it's designed to minimize texture distortion. As ever it'll depend on your model and texture requirements. Seeing as you're doing the cabinet course then maybe conformat will be the best option for this particular case.

    Hi Jack,

As a general rule of thumb, Angle Baesd usually gives better results with 'organic' shapes and Conformal is better with geometric shapes, like what we are using here. The third option, Minimal Stretch (AKA SLIM) is irrelevant for our purpose.

    Hi Jack,

sorry for the late reply, I was travelling.
I see you've already got all the answers you need, thanks to everyone.
Martin put it best: "Conformal" would be the correct option. In case of the bodies and fronts in this project, given the seams have been marked correctly, you won't see much of a difference to angle based though.

Minimum stretch will give some weird shapes sometimes when working on objects like theses, so don't use that option here.
