Trouble rigging a tail

Question Modeling

Hi all,

I'm making a character that I need to pose for a still render (no animation). I've been watching some of Wayne's courses.

I'm struggling with the tail.

1. It folds at a strange angle when leaving the body.

Posed mesh:

Topology:

What am I doing wrong? Too few bones? Bad bone placement? Something wrong with the mesh?

2. Also, when I try to pose the tail, it jumps from the spot where I put it.

I would truly appreciate any help.

I'm no bone or rigging master, but I'd say it feels like with geometry, in that if you need finer bend, you need more geometry so there's more detail for the mesh to behave like you want. So maybe you don't have enough bones for the fine move you want to accomplish? And so it bends wonky?

About the jump I have no idea. But better to wait for someone who knows all about rigging.

On the popping it's hard to tell without looking at the rig, but first guess is the the control bone is connected to the IK Chain.

As for the bend you should have a little more geometry where the tail connects to the body. Also you need to either move the head of the first bone of the tail further inside or add another bone. The start of a tail is further in. The tail movement starts from the butt not from where the tail merges into the butt. I hope that make sense. Here's reference image of a similar creature.

I marked red where the missing Bone for your rig and green for the adjusted Tail1. Sorry, I was using a mouse so the line is a little crooked.

Thank you both! dillenbata3, I definitely made the control bone part of the IK chain. I skimmed a few tutorials and thought I'd just take a shortcut. 😅

I'm away from my blender for the weekend, but I'll incorporate your great pointers next week. Thank you!

I ended up implementing the super bendy chain from one of Wayne's character rigging tutorials, which gets me close enough for this render. Thank you, Dwayne and Omar!
