Shading

Question

Hello!

I did abit of repetition of texturing recently and in one of JL's lessons a mesh he used for demonstration caught my interests. I thought I will try to make a similar one to see if I have forgot about mesh modeling. Here is the result. I noticed abit strange shading here and there. That is mainly because of the n-gons and disrupted edge loops, am I right?

    Hi Tom,

    That shading is perfectly normal.

When you use Shade Smooth, the Shading Normals are interpolated between the Face Normals.

If you look at the Vertex Normals, that are 'halfway' between the connected Faces, you can see that the Faces near the top of that flat backside, have a rather different angle than the lower ones, so the Shadig Normals (use when Shade Smooth) are differnt near the top:

Sorry, not the best visual representation.
