Hi, I tried to find the answer by searching, but I can't figure it out. I cannot get the glass to apply to the shelf in object mode. In fact, I haven't been able to set any of the materials in object mode. Only in edit mode does the assign button appear in material settings. Both surface and viewport shading are set as shown in the video, but nothing happens. My screen looks exactly like the screen in the video, but mine doesn't work.
Also, copy modifiers and link materials don't do anything, no matter which shelf I select first and which I shift-select.
Hi Shale CCookiePuss,
Could you add a screenshot of your shelves with the material tab open? That makes it easier to narrow down the problem. Without seeing what's going on it's pretty hard to pin point the problem.
The assign button is only available in edit mode. It enables you to assign different material to specific parts of a mesh. So that's correct behaviour.
In object mode you can only add materials to the whole model and add more material slots which you can then assign in edit mode.
Hi Sascha, here it is...

Thanks, Shale.
I guessed this might be the issue and it's an easy fix: You have some leftover materials on the shelves, which aren't needed anymore. These came over when we copied one face of the hanger to create the shelves.
You can simply select all the materials in the red box and click the little minus icon on the right to delete them from the object. When all that's left is your glass material, it should work as expected. (See lesson at about 2:27)
Btw. you can post screenshots directly here too. The easiest method is to copy the image to your clipboard and then just ctrl+v it into the textbox. 😉
Wow, that fixed it! Sorry, I didn't realize the materials were competing with each other. Copy modifiers and link materials also worked after I removed them.
Also, a quick tip for shrinking the glass: I subtracted 2mm from the X dimension in object mode and applied scale, which was quicker than trimming each end.
Oh, one more thing...I'm curious why you don't apply rotation to the shelf pegs?
Unless you tell Blender to do otherwise, it simply uses the first material slot for the object, so if the glass is further down, it won't show.
That's another good way to shrink the glass, absolutely.
I don't apply the rotation very often, unless I want a specific default rotation and/or work with modifiers that rely on rotation. In the case of the shelf pins it doesn't make a difference whether the rotation is applied or not, so I leave it alone.
If I were to apply an array modifier to them, I might revisit that decision.
Thanks for letting me know about uploading screenshots, that will save some time ;-)
