Urgh, I feel much better after watching this one. Linking is not the most intuitive for me and I always felt a bit dumb for not getting it. Honestly I often just click random buttons until it looks like it worked.
I know it's been a while since this happened, so I wonder if anything was improved or streamlined on this matter?
I mainly use it in a much smaller and more manageable scale, such as a library of modeled logos that I keep bringing in for different scenes and animations. Logos are updated all the time (at least in my world), so it makes sense.
Anyway. I feel your guys' pain. Maybe we are lucky enough to have a CG cookie tutorial to clear the common questions that hover this subject? 🥴 😬
ps. not a question, just some afternoon ramblings that might generate some good tips if I'm lucky. Lol
One thing to keep in mind is that we were linking over the internet, through Google Drive, where connections fail and Google Drive misplaces files, duplicates files, erases files, flat out moves them to where ever it wants all of a sudden. So most of the headaches are due to the nature of everyone being in different parts of the world and having a choppy software mediating everything.
So, I watched most of that video. I prefer Object->Library Override->Make in the 3D Viewport. It's easier and you don't have to remember selected or content or both. Also he has some kind of problem with The armature or the hierarchy of collections, because The armature should be moveable in object mode. The mesh won't unless you select it and do Object->library Override->Make on it. This is why even if it's a single bone I almost always rig my assets. Of course if you link in an Object you won't have to override twice. Just once will do. Also using the asset library set to link instead of the default append(Reuse Data) makes it easy to edit your asset by right clicking on the asset then clicking open blend file. I still use edit linked Library addon, but it's nice knowing that if I'm using a system that doesn't have that addon then I can do it thru the asset browser.
Ha, I didn't know about that quirk with the bones. Thanks for the tip Dwayne!
I'll start using the viewport override I think... I can't say I fully understand the difference between selected and content. Lol.
Such a confusing topic in my head, but too useful to just not use it.
Slowly but surely! Lots of golden nuggets, or cookies, in these streams.
Yeah, now that I've watched that one video I'm going back and watching the rest. My watch list keeps growing.
