Candle Task

posted to: Translucency
Hi! Here are two results. I played with "paper like material" shaders and with "Skin like material" Shaders. The skin like material looks so nice. I'll add the two to show the difference. (JPEG format is so awful to look at)

This semi pale yellow is with "Paper like material " - obviously it's not as thin as it should be for a thin material...
And this realistic one, with beautiful gradient is with the "Skin like material". erial The Candle.jpgJPEG The Candle.jpg

Agreed, the last one feels like real wax. The bottom part is very black though, where it makes contact with the ground plane. Don't know if it has something to do with the shader or if it's the placement of the model.

Yeah, it’s because I have a little bit of the model under the plane. I tried to fix it by Flatten, but then the whole candle becomes unrecognisable or smaller parts just go way too much to the surface, so I’m not sure I know how to make the bottom part of the candle completely flat after sculpting at this moment of time but I think that was a very good remark of yours, I didn’t even notice I had the part of the candle under the plane. I’ll try to fix it with more practice in sculpting. Thank you!

    Hi Maiil,

You can perform a Box Trim in Sculpt Mode to get the bottom of the candle flat:

And then Smooth out the sharp Edge.

Thank you, Martin! I still didn't get rid of that dark outline on the bottom of the candle but at least I know now how to cut the model in sculpt mode. Candle 2.jpgCandle 3.jpg

You might get a better result in the future...Blender 5.0 has a better Subsurface Scattering (multi bounce), that helpos with those dark areas:

Don't worry, a lot of times people hack their way out of situations because right out of the box the results are not very optimal. But with each passing version there's an optimization here and there.

I made everything except the fire, took it from a plugin. so, I took my time with this one. Mix the courses that already took in like Mesh Modeling, Digital Sculpting, Materials & Shading Lighting and some internet candle references from internet.
