How do you animate a rubber band so that it collides with itself and other objects?

The way I would rig a rubber band is to use empty-anchors with an IK spline, though there could be better ways. But, there's another step in this process: if the rubber band runs into a surface, like the ground or itself, what video do I need to watch to make it deform in response to the ground or itself?

    Again, using a Cloth Sim is probably the way to go.
