When I use the multires modifier, when sculpting the highest level subdivisions, it also propagates/sculpts all the subdivisions below it. He explains that if your sculpt isn't turning out the way you want it, just go down a subdivision and delete the higher ones.. but it's still going to be the same shape, just at a lower resolution... so I guess Im not seeing the point of the multires mod... wouldn't it just be the same as applying 1 subdivision surface mod... sculpting.. then applying another subdivision surface

Am I missing something? Is the purpose of the multires mod just to sculpt without having to apply subdivisions?

    Hi Skoop SSkoopnox ,

First, let me get something straight; You can Add a Modifier and you can then Apply the Modifier (which also removes it from the Modifier Stack).

If you have a Cube , Add a Subdivision Surface Modifier to it, then switch to Sculpt Mode, you are Sculpting on a Cube (with only 8 Vertices).. You will actually have to Apply the Modifier, before you can Sculpt on the Subdivided Cube.

This means, that if you Add and Apply a Subdvision Surface Modifier, Sculpt a bit and then Add and Apply another Subsurf Modifier, etc., you can't go back a Level.

    Advantage Multires 😉

There are more advantages to a Multires Modifier; for instance, if you don't Delete the Higher Level, you can adjust the shape of the model (by temporarily Sculpting on a lower Level), while 'keeping' the details you already Sculpted.

Another thing though, if I'm not mistaken, for the lowest levels to get the shape of the higher levels, you have to click on "apply base". Otherwise the base mesh wont change.
