Observation only: Blender 4.4 back to shade auto smooth - with shade smooth by angle as a modifier

Obervation: I could see sharp edges even without auto smooth enabled, and then realised I am in Blender 4.4 - I do not have any addons installed at the moment that require a specific version so can learn/play with the most recent version (and am confident I can read documentation and forums if there are differences in how things work). I have the shade auto smooth option as a context memu but not shade smooth by angle. I think shade smooth by angle is a modifier in v4.4.

    Hi moggsoceanlane ,

    In short:

In Blender 4.0 and before there was Shade Auto Smooth in the Object (and Context)  Menu; this could be adjusted in the Object Data Properties Panel.

In Blender 4.1, there was an 'in-between' situation, with two options,  a Smooth By Angle in the Object Menu and also a Modifier Smooth By Angle.

Since Blender 4.2, there is only a Modifier: Smooth By Angle, but that can also be Added via the Object Menu, where it is now again called Shade Auto Smooth.

Don't worry, it's normal to have this kind of situation all over Blender, it just changes too much, because it gets updated a lot, which is a good thing but this is the price we pay. So the way around it is, if you're going to follow along with the video, to watch the course with the Blender version it was recorded with.

I'll be updating the Blender Basics videos soon and this is on my "to edit" list. It will probably just come out of the video, as the "Shade Auto Smooth" is back in the menu (as of 4.2 LTS) and there's little point in explaining the Shade Smooth by Angle in that video
