Odd Faceting

Question Modeling
posted to: Dice Modeling

Hi all,

I'm going off on a tangent on the dice project here. I'm modeling polyhedron dice and I've created some faceting on the D12 which isn't evident on any of the other dice. Not sure it's going to be drastic but I'm going texture them Translucent Plastic and it might look a bit odd. Any ideas? Thanks.

    Hi Dodge ,

That's not good. It looks like a Mesh problem. My guess would be, that those pentagons aren't completely flat.

Have you tried Shade Smooth? That might be enough to 'fix' the shading. Otherwise, try to repair the Mesh; the top and bottom faces are probably fine (depending on how you made this), so that would mean fixing the 10 Vertices in the middle (or just make the bottom half and then Mirror and Rotate on the Z-Axis).

Here's what I mean, these Angles are not exactly corect, therefor the Faces are slightly bend:

Very difficult to get exactly right (or maybe you know a trick?), so Shade Smooth is probably needed (but try to get as close as posible).

If you install the Tissue Addon, you can get a very decent result (from an Icosphere or Level 1).

    This is with Flat Shading:

Set this to Shade Smooth and the result will be close to perfect.

(And Geometry Nodes also has a Dual Mesh Node.)

You an upload the file if you want us to take a look at what could be causing that faceting.

Thanks guys, I'll check out the addon and see what I can do. Here's the file. Thanks again!

    Hi Dodge,

It is as I suspected; the pentagons are not flat:

I found the Dice Generator addon that ships with Blender. Bit disappointed really, as knowing me, I will never learn how to properly make a dodecahedron myself, now that I can do it with a click. Still it's going to save me a ton of time. I'm hoping the eyedroppers will enable me to easily attach objects to the faces. Time will tell...Polyhedral.png
