Snow Globe - Modeling the Window

When I go to make the curtains, I Ctrl+R to subdivide the plane we extruded.  I go to top view and select every other vertices, hit G and X and it won't move. It is locked in the X direction.  I have even tried to Rip (V) the strips so they could be be stretched, and no luck.

Not sure what I am doing incorrect.

And yes, I have closed out and restarted.  I have deleted and recreated the curtains several times.

Thanks

Bart

    HI Bart,

I have no idea, what you are doing wrong either.

Can you give us more info please, like Screenshots, or even a Screengrab?

I've attached a couple screen shots.  I seem to be able to move the vertices up/down on the Y but they don't want to move on the X.  I included a full screen so you can look at the settings I have setup.

Thanks for any guidance.  I'm going to move on to the next lesson.

    Hey Bart,

    Where are those screenshots?

Okay, you uploaded the Images, but didn't add them to the Post...if you hover over the Image you uploaded, there will appear a + symbol and you need to click that in order to add the image to the post:

But anyway, looking at your Screenshot, the only thing I can think of, is that you didn't Apply the Scale and have a Scale of 0 in the Global X-Axis.

What if you just G to move the selected vertices? Don't lock them in any axis, are they still locked in place and don't move?

It's even better if you can make a video capture of your screen so we can see the steps you're taking and see what might be going wrong or you can also upload your file so we can try and move them ourselves and see what's the problem.

Just to make sure that it's not a keymapping problem. After you press G at the bottom of Blender window the status bar should look something like this:

    025-03-08 214710.png

If you don't see this then it may be a keymap issue which can be fixed by going to preferences and at bottom left corner click the 3 lines and then click Load Factory Preferences. If there is a save preferences button you will need to click that to keep the changes when you reload blender.

    HI Bart bparish ,

    Here's what I think happened:

at around 4 minutes in, Ethan Scales a Plane in Edit Mode:

    Scale_03.png

EDIT: It's actually the Plane at around 5:30, that is used for the curtains, but the idea is the same.

and you have probably done this in Object Mode. That means, that you Scaled the Object's Coordinate System.

Here's what happens when you do that (Plane Scaled in Object Mode and Moved with G, X, 1 in Edit Mode):

    Scale_04.png

and the same with an X-Scale of 0.5:

    Scale_05.png

and with an even smaller X-Axis Scale:

    Scale_06.png

So, with a Scale of 0, the X-Coordinates would need to be infinite, in order to Move the Plane's Vertices even a tiny bit in the X-Axis.

Hey Guys, thanks for all the responses. Its been a very busy week, but I appreciated all the assistance.

Martin was correct .... I missed the apply scale.  As soon as I read that, I knew what I had done incorrect.  Important lesson learned.

    Thanks

    Bart
