flat result

Question Modeling

Hi guys, on this step(cream position i'll finish later) already created parts look flat and unrealistic: not enough highlights, what else would you recommend to correct, improve?

Food is one of the most difficult things to make in 3D, next up in line is making realistic humans. Sadly is not just one thing that you need to improve the render, it's a lot lot of things, and most of them can't be really expressed in a "do this and that, push this or that button". It's much more than that, it has to do with lighting, shading, artistic eye, composition, etc.

I guess the best advice I could give right now is to study reference. What's going to make it more on the realistic side is all the micro details on the surface of the ingredient, which in our case is the materials we create in the shader editor. Try to incorporate the fine details instead of the broad features. And that works in conjunction of constantly switching and moving your lights to see how the material is reacting and behaving. It's not easy, but doable, food renders is one of those holy grails people fight hard to strive for.
