Question Modeling

This is my first attempt retopologising a sculpture so I've included a link to the FBX file so that you can import it into blender and check the topology, and the original sculpture. In the file is also the reference image that I used. Please let me know how I did, I made the topology as clean as I could.

The models seem to be overlapping one another, but from what I can tell it seems good. Only things I saw out of place were a collapsed loop on the eye:

And some nasty six sided poles:

  • Thanks for the warning about the poles, but the eye was done on purpose to quickly brute force the shape of the pupil, because I just wanted to finish hte overall look and it was the main body that was my priority. How would I fix the poles, so that I have a better idea for my next model?

I tried this, making them 5-sided by ripping and adding a new face - would this be a good potential fix?

Seems like a better one yes. Sometimes we push too much wanting things all quads when in reality a triangle or an Ngon is a better solution, and possibly even behaves better with subdivision. Sometimes having it all quads would mess up other areas, so you just have to keep on eye on how that parts is behaving, we can moderately bend the rules from time to time.

  • This is why I'm practicing, I didn't even know that best practice was keeping poles to 5 or less sides. I didn't know 6 was a problem. Now I know that. Also the models were overlapping because I was using one to snap the vertices to, the idea was that you'd hide the model that you weren't inspecting to avoid clutter.
