Working with Smooth and Sharp.

With monkey head,   Edit Mode: 1) when I selecte my  four faces  [3]  if I want ONLY these four faces to be smooth...do I select  Shade Smooth or Shade Flat?    2) How to  make the  the OPPOSITE happen when I select these four faces? .....meaning to make the rest of the monkey be smooth while keeping the four selected faces sharp?  3)  To control the sharpness of the entire  individual faces , do I use edges [2] or is this accomplished using Object mode, object, shade auto smooth where I can adjust the degree of sharpness?

Ad 1) You can Select Faces and  Face Menu (or CTRL+F) > Shade Smooth (or Flat) and ad 2) with CTRL+I, Invert the Selection and Shade Smooth (or Flat):

If you are in face select mode of edit mode then shade flat/smooth is applied to whatever faces you have selected. In object mode shade flat/smooth applies to the hole mesh. You can select your 4 faces set it then press Ctrl+I to insert your selection and apply the opposite effect.
