error with insert face

I'm stuck at minute 8:28 of the video because every time i try to insert a new face, the surrounding faces become deformed. I originally though this to be an issue with extra vertices hiding within the mesh so after merging the ones i found the issue hasn't gone away. Is there something I am missing or leaving unchecked?

    Hi Jaime,

Could you provide some more information, like one or more screenshots maybe?

Yes, some screenshots for visualization of the area to see what might be going on. Also maybe even better a screen grab video.

Hello sorry for the late response, from what I understand the shared vertices are pulling the sides inwards. I am just a little lost why this doesn't happen in the tutorial. would it be because of a different version of blender?

    HI Jaime @Agedteck,

That is certainly not because of a Version difference.

First of all, get rid of possible 'double Vertices'. (A (not Box Select, or so), M > Merge > By Distance, adjust the Distance, if needed!). Followed by SHIFT+N to make your Normals consistent (just in case).

    Then try again.

If that doesn't help, could you post a link to your .blend file (via Dropbox, Googledrive, or so), so we can have a look?
