Face nearest snap to same target

Question

Hi, here I show a simple example of face nearest snapping it snap to the plane to the left because initially it is the nearest but to the plane to the right if you move along positive x approximately 1.5. This I understand but I don't understand the snap to same target option. So if someone could show me examples of this in both object and edit mode I would be thankful.

    Hi Tom,

Snapping is weird/unintuitive, until the coin drops.

Remember, Snap To Nearest Surface is about Snapping Individual Elements!

In Edit Mode, it behaves as expected:

    p Same Target_00.png

Snap To Same Target will only Snap the Selected Vertices to the Nearest Surfaces of the left Cube.

In Object mode, you'll have to hold SHIFT while Snapping, in order to do the 'same' thing:

    p Same Target_01.png

I hope this makes sense (you'll have to try it yourself, of course).

Hi Martin, maybe it is me who doesn't understand how it should behave. I thought snap to same target would limit it to the object which it was initially nearest to. But as you can see here I can make it snap to any object I want if I just make the proper transformation. And also I couldn't see any difference in object mode when I hold down shift. I'm using Blender 3.6.12

    Oh, you're right,

that doesn't seem to work in 3.6 (I currently have 3.6.18) for some reason (Bug?).

    Works in 4.2 and 4.3 though...🤔

Just tested it and it also works in 3.3 and 4.0.

Okay, maybe time to move to one of those then :) Thanks

I installed Blender 4.2.5.0 LTS from microsoft store. And yup it now works in edit mode. But still can't get it to work in object mode. You must have a magical finger :)

    Hi Tom,

I have a 4.2.3 lying around and it seems to work fine in Object Mode.

I first press G, then hold down SHIFT (+ CTRL). The CTRL is, of course, if you don't have the Magnet Icon enabled.

    EDIT:
Oh, you are right, if you move the Mouse Cursor far enough, it doesn't work anymore (not even in 4.3). But you do need to Move the Mouse a lot further, when holding SHIFT, in order to get Objects to Snap to the wrong Target...

Maybe file a bug report? (I haven't checked yet, if this already has been reported.)

It might have to do with rounding errors (Cursor 'wrapping around') and then maybe it won't be fixable, but who knows?

    Hi Martin

It is not that big of a deal. Other things though that I don't understand is why they have a backface culling option for face nearest? Face nearest looking at a face location not if it is back or front. So backface culling shouldn't matter. Am I right? And the align rotation to target option. I haven't looked that much at it but for a simple example with a cube snapping to a uv sphere I see no difference having that option on neither in object or edit mode

Well, to be honest, I have never used Backface Culling and don't know exactly how that is supposed to work.

But I think that Align Rotation to Target doesn't work with Face Nearest (and even isn't supposed to work...maybe it shouldn't  be there as an Option, when Face Nearest is enabled...I don't know) and maybe the same is true for Backface Culling.

There are still quite a few Settings in Blender, that I have never touched and I don't really know what they do 😉

Yeah, if I try to summarize. I definitely see the use of face project. When it comes to face nearest maybe it is good if you want to make a quick wrap, but if you want a more accurate result in a more complex situation it is probably better to use the shrinkwrap modifier.

...I will now continue to finish my model with primitives exercise, so I can submit it in the Blender mesh modeling bootcamp course. Thanks Martin

So far, I have used Face Nearest only for Retopology (of an arm or leg, for instance). That's also what it was intended for, if I'm not mistaken, but there for sure are other use cases.
