Can I use a weightmap to isolate a texture?

I'm new to Blender, but I have used Lightwave. I've seen a weightmap used with instancing, like where some plants should grow. But I've never seed a weightmap used to control a texture using either procedural or image maps. Why is that? Can it be done? thanks

As far as I know in Blender weight map just defines a vertex group.

I haven't seen vertex groups as a way to control textures but you can do that with with alpha maps (black and white all the gradients in between) with either ones created procedurally or painted/created by yourself.

    Hi Jimi,

    It certainly can be done.

It's basically just Values between 0 and 1, assigned to the Vertices and those can be used to control anything you like, for instance:

Dynamic Paint also uses Weight Maps.

In Blender there are many ways to do one thing. So what are you trying to do? Because there might be another way you can achieve the result you're after.
