Animation livestreams/walkthroughs/someone doing it

I'm looking though the uploaded livestreams and may have found a few videos to start with. But does anyone have any videos they've watched (CGC's livestreams or anything from youtube etc), where someone is working on an animation?

I don't think I'm necessarily after a tutorial on how to do something specific, but I wouldn't mind just watching someone work on something - whether it's to gain an insight into workflow, hear what someone is thinking while doing, or just to play in the background while I make my way through my own exercises.

I'll start with this video and see where it takes me, but I'd love any recommendations if anyone has one. It doesn't need to be in Blender either.

Sounds like what you need is a Podcast maybe? Maybe there's one out there that suit your need? Or you want to be able to change to a video to see what someone is doing if you hear something interesting?

Actually yeah, either a podcast, or a video. I'm fortunate enough that at my workplace I can put on headphones and listen to whatever I like - so I've made my way though many (many) podcast interviews with people that work across the CG industry, be it Denoise, CG Spectrum, and even Andrew Price's discontinued podcast (CG Spectrum has been particularly good for getting to listen to more women talk about their work too). This was all prior to finding out that animation is the rabbit hole I'd like to dive into.

To perhaps elaborate more as well - The videos or podcast interviews I've listened to have been more about work experience and "origin stories", which are absolutely inspiring and motivating of course - and I'll keep listening to those, and by all means I've love any recommendations on that front.

But in regards to animation videos/podcasts, maybe what I'm after is more of a 'play through', kind of like someone streaming a video game, but instead they're working on an animation while (ideally) talking about what they're doing?

Don't know about those. But there is a great Podcast I used to listen to called Art Cafe:

TY Omar! I'll have a look today!

I am about halfway through the livestream Q&A/critique session that I linked at the start (It was cool to see Wayne talk about your showreel!). This is the perfect thing that I'd love to get my hands on more of.

While replying here, I used my noggin and just googled "animation critique" and found a number of videos. There seems to be lots on YT, infact there's one person critiquing entries from 11 second club which looks worthwhile.

    I'll keep scrounging for more!

    Hi Harris,

I don't know of any YT videos where animator's talk through what they are doing while they are doing it. But that kind of thing is what you will a lot of in animation school.

For example - at iAnimate, Jason Ryan does a 2 hour demo every week where he does just that.

Animation school is something I think you should think about ;)

In the meantime, if you wanted to learn about workflow, try the Body Mechanics and Animation Workflow course. It's a younger version of me but the content is still very much valid. There are some quicker ways of doing things inside Blender these days but the actual animation workflow is exactly the same and hasn't changed since it was developed in the 1920s.

    -Plan

    -Block

    -Spline

    -Polish

(although the 'spline' part is a computer animation term....it used to be 'in-between' but it's the same thing)

Once you understand workflow, then there are the little tricks you can pick up from everywhere that you can use to get you to one of the goals faster in specific circumstances.

Like "oh I can copy and paste that animation and create overlapping action - great idea" etc.

Also once you understand workflow you can also look into other techniques like space switching.

(Pierrick Piccaut has many videos about this)

    I hope that helps.

I don't know if they are still doing it, but on the CG Cookies' discord on Wednesdays they were doing animation. Last I heard they were debating on doing a group animation, or just sharing their screen as they work on their animation. It's supposed to be in one of the buddy channels. This was back in October I think. I lost Internet connection except for my phone. So, I haven't been on there in a while.

Thanks @waylow, animation school is certainly something I have looked into lately. For the time being, I'll follow through with the bootcamp and it's subsequent courses. I've found a playlist of videos on YT with Jason Ryan, so I'll check those out. While watching the animation Q&A livestream you hosted you recommended the Animator's Survival Kit - It's actually like the fifth time it's been recommended to me in the past month, so I've just ordered a copy. But yes, for me, learning workflow early on helps put everything else into context.

And dillenbata3 funnily enough, the wednesday animation Buddy catchup on discord is actually myself and Phil Osterbauer! Someone called John hopped on last time too so it may be the three of us now. We've taken a summer break from it, just to relax over the holiday season, but we'll be back to it soon - I believe we changed to Fridays (His Thursday) due to schedules?
