Strange bevel behaviour

posted to: Modeling the Sides

For the knobs on the side I have used the knive project tool instead of the shown method. But when I try to bevel the knob surface it was not working. Nothing happens. I also found out that for the other parts the bevel is still in place but in the bevel edge data is set to 0.
As an example you can see that the bevel is in place, but the bevel weight edge data is 0

For the knob in the middle the bevel weight edge data is 1 but no bevel at all

Is this a blender bug?

    Hi Bernd bbguenthe ,

    No, it's not a bug!

It's a classic beginner mistake; your model, most likely has so-called 'double Vertices'.  You probably Extruded or Inset the top Face and then Cancelled the Move part.

The solution is to Select everything and the Merge the Vertices: press A and then M > Merge > By Distance.

If that doesn't help, with everything still Selected,  press SHIFT+N, to re-calculate the Normals.

But my money is on the double Verts.

    Oh wait,

are you saying that the Beveled Edges in the first screenshot are from the Modifier?

    That would be crazy...

Disable all third party Addons (you can also go to File > Defaults > Load Factory Settings) and try again.

    Hi Martin,

the second solution does the trick (kind of). Have found out minutes ago that one addon (for creation of the the button circle) destroys the weight data. I retried the knife project with a blender circle and now everything works a expected. Unfortually my entire model is now "corrupted". Just because I thought there is a better way to create those side buttons. But this is very often the case in Blender. There are so many traps to fall into, very frustrating.

But thanks a lot for your help!

Not really a trap. You took a different route and learned a new tools behavior. This will help you in the future to determine which tools works best for your end goal. As for the addon situation, this is why I recommend to people to learn the manual way and how Blender behaves first. Then use addons to speed up workflow.
