Giulia's Polybook

Polybooks

Hello!

I started the CORE Modelling path last week and as a kind of consistency challenge I plan to upload my results here. I hope it keeps me motivated (I'm that kind of person who needs it a lot, I've lost count of the times I picked up and abandoned Blender) by showing some progress.

Also, constructive feedback is highly appreciated.

Here comes the snowman:

And the sci-fi crate:

I added a few insets as a further exercise and corrected an ngon that somehow showed up on the crate's side.

I'm busy with a couple of more theoretical videos in the CORE Modelling course so I decided to model a variation to the sci-fi crate: it's supposed to be a wooden crate with a few planks around it.ย

It's too regular for a "real" wooden crater and in general it looks nothing special (especially without a material) but it gave me the chance to get in touch with a few symmetry issues I didn't encounter in the course exercise so I guess it's still a good way to not stay idle.ย

That's how it goes, branching off, experimenting with our own models, leaving the comfort of the tutorial nest and spreading our wings on our own. It starts with simple models but you'll slowly get more ambitious. Wooden create is looking great ๐Ÿค™๐Ÿผ

Before watching the video lesson I thought the ball was so much harder to model. There are so many selection tricks I didn't know, I'm so glad they're being explained so well while putting them into use

It's been a while and I've been following pretty theoretic lessons in the CORE Modeling course. Finally the curves + array modifier sparked a bit of creativity in me and so here's a (very rough) caterpillar. I decided to model its feet and face as a closing touch, even if they're not very accurate, to serve a refresher for older topology concepts: I had to re-do them a few times until I figured out how not to mess with the rest of the object too muchcaterpillar.png

Very nice, love where your creativity took you with the tools you've learned so far. I can foresee a future where you rig this guy once you reach those lessons.ย

A bit of hard surface modelling (hard drive lesson on CORE course). Quite a long one with a lot of information to learn and apply but as I progress I feel like I have so many more options to practice on my ownhd_front.png

Added a finishing touch with two USB-A ports, a cable plug and a switch on the back of the hard drive:

Great HD. The material is so black at first it looked like hole on the back. Now I see the switches.ย

I could have gone on with the lessons in the CORE modelling class, but I had too much fun with the hard surface modelling of the HD and decided to make my life more complicated by modelling a midi-interface I use to connect my e-drum to my computer. It's a bit scary to make my own decisions from beginning to end instead of being guided and decide on the smallest details, and it took much longer than the HD, but I'm quite satisfied with how it went.

For what concerns the colors/materials, I guess and hope that they'll get better once I follow the Lighting/Materials course in the path, as for now I want to focus on the modelling.

    • ๐Ÿ‘๐ŸผWell done!

It truly is scary to make your own decisions instead of being guided, and stepping into that zone is where we grow. In life we always have two choices, to step forward into growth or step back into safety. Nicely done ๐Ÿค˜

The funniest thing when some non-italian person says "coffee cup" is that what they mean is quite different from what we mean here in Italy. Just to be safe, I modelled both ๐Ÿ˜Ž

I don't know why, but that cookie looks so mad to me (as long as it's not mad at me it's fine :) ).

It was so cool to create it by basically "connecting a few dots based on an image reference". Before approaching the exercise I thought the easiest way to do it was by creating a cylinder, but with all the considerations about the topology that have been explained as the exercise progressed I guess this is one of the cases where it makes sense to start with a face and go from there. And I also guess that knowing when a technique is more suitable than another comes from experience after trying and failing a few times.

You hit the nail in the head. Knowing when a technique is more suitable than another comes from experience and after failing many times. It's the only way to grow, thanks nature.ย

I thought it was going to take a week, it took two. But I'm quite happy with how the final room came out. I'd probably just make the shelves over the bed a bit thinner, but I'll leave them as they are. Definitely struggled with the lighting while trying to get the final render so I can't wait to take the lighting course to understand why the Eevee sun lamp through the window didn't light the room enough.

Orthographic view and perspective give such a different feel of the room. The first one in ortho, everything feels so squished and bulky, but then you see the perspective and it's like oh ok, eels normal now.

  • thleosw replied

Yes I tried to follow Jonathan advice from the exercise explanation but maybe I should have made the room a bit bigger to appreciate it in ortho view. Also because some of the objects I put some effort into ended up hidden
