Armature / Bone Parenting

posted to: 06 Bone Tools

Is it possible to parent an armature B to a bone inside a different armature A? If this question makes no sense, what would be the best way to carry this out, in such a way that armature B is unmodified and the two armatures are not unified into one? Suppose that artist B is creating a model B to be held in the hand of a character model A, each with its own armature, and you want to be able to connect them as simply as possible, to allow for later updates to B.

    Hello Bee Hive,
Thanks for your description.  Yes that is possible, however it will probably be best to use constraints for this.
You can constrain the Root of Armature B to the bone in question.

Hi Tian @Tian du plessis ,

You have 4 Armatures, instead of 1 Armature with 4 Bones.

You cannot Parent an Armature to another Armature. At least not like this, Wayne will be able to provide a better answer for sure.

@Tian du plessis - yep.  That's 4 armatures with 1 bone.  Rather than 1 armature with 3 bones.

You can join them all back again - but it's going to be easier to delete all but 1 armature and then jump into edit mode to add the additional bones.

Don't worry - making these mistakes is actually part of your learning.
