Subsurface scattering and translucent shaders seem to create similar effects. When would I want to use one versus the other? Why are they different shaders?
Subsurface Scattering takes the volume (thickness) into account and Translucency doesn't. See answer to your earlier question.

Maybe a lame way to think about it is, Subsurface is for skin, translucent for candles and stuff like that? I image that colored paper that is semi-transparent for translucency.
